Katherine Snow Smith grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Needham Broughton High School. She earned her B.A. in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill, then worked for newspapers in Greenville, S.C., and Charlotte before joining the Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Katherine started as a business reporter but became the parenting columnist known as “Rookie Mom” while raising her three children. As they entered school, she returned to covering business then became the editor of Bay, the newspaper’s monthly arts and culture magazine. After a few more years, she left the paper to work in public relations.
Katherine returned to Raleigh to be closer to her parents after her youngest child left for college. She started teaching journalism as an adjunct at UNC-CH and found she connected easily with students and loved helping them become better writers.
Katherine earned her M.A. in Media and Communication in 2024, and went on to teach at UNC, High Point University and in Campbell University’s Second Chance Initiative inside Sampson County Correctional Facility. She also freelances in public relations and writes for Business North Carolina, Our State, Business North Carolina, Walter, O’ Henry and South Park.
Her first book, “Rules for the Southern Rule Breaker” came out in 2020, while her second book, “Stepping on the Blender & Other Times Life Gets Messy” hit bookstores in 2023.
